This course is designed to help you improve your reading, writing, maths and communication skills in preparation for working in the health sector. Learners will engage in individual and group activities to make learning relevant, practical and fun. You’ll build your employable skills by watching real workplaces, growing your understanding of how to work and interact in a professional environment. A guest speaker from the health sector will visit class, so you can hear what it’s like from an industry professional.
The course will help you develop:
- Literacy (reading and writing) and numeracy (maths) skills for further study or work in health services
- Improved communication skills for further study and employment
- Digital literacy skills for learning and communication in the workplace
- Understanding of the health sector, job opportunities and career pathways
- Awareness of entry level roles and training requirements

Course Requirements

Entry requirements
Learners must be:
- an Australian Citizen, or
- a holder of an Australian permanent visa, or
- a New Zealand citizen, and
- not enrolled in a secondary school.
You will need to present a current and valid green Medicare card on the first day of training.
Limited to Victorian residents living in the following local government areas:

Study requirements
To complete your course work and be successful, students will need:
- Access to digital technologies (e.g. laptop, desktop, tablet-computer and/or smartphone)
This course aims to develop essential literacy, numeracy and employability skills required within health services. Suitable and interested learners are identified through a pre-assessment with skills at ACSF Level 1 and below Level 2.
This course will help learners progress to further training, and ultimately lead to employment. Taking part in the course also enables learners to assess whether employment in this sector is suitable for them.
Further study options include Certificate III in Community Services, Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing or Disability) and Certificate III in Health Services Assistant.
This course is delivered with ACFE (Adults, Community and Further Education) funding and is free to eligible individuals.

On campus (day) – Study face to face in a classroom setting.
- One (1) day per week: 9:30am – 4:00pm
Blended (day or night) – Study virtually with real time, instructor-led sessions via Zoom and on-campus.
- One (1) day per week: 9:30am – 1:00pm, plus 1 hour of trainer led support and 1.5 hours of structured self-paced activities.
