When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in early 2020, Laura watched with bated breath as countries began slamming their borders shut. As the manager of a successful travel agency, Laura had spent the past eight years relying heavily on tourism and its billion-dollar annual turnover. Now, with the industry buckling under the pressure of worldwide lockdowns and restrictions, Laura was prompted to consider career alternatives.

Laura evaluated her strengths, values and aspirations, and decided that a career in caring was her next venture. She then began researching training organisations that would help her reach this goal, soon discovering genU Training. Upon discussion with genU Training consultants, Laura decided to undertake CHC43315 Certificate IV in Mental Health and was delighted to receive a fee exemption to complete the qualification.

A short time after commencing her studies, Laura gained casual work as a Mental Health Support Worker, and within just one month, she transitioned to almost full-time hours. Laura was then promoted to Team Leader, her current role, which sees her manage 16 staff members alongside her own caseload of six participants. Her day-to-day tasks include assisting participants with exercise, meal preparation, community activities and appointments, as well as preparing staff rosters, conducting risk assessments and sourcing new participants.

Although not the career path she anticipated she would take, Laura says mental health work is exactly where she wants to be, and she is thrilled with the support she has received from Training Coordinator Kate and Trainer Anita.

“When you’re so comfortable in a career and it crumbles around you, you need to surround yourself with the right people and organisations,” Laura says.

“I’m learning a lot at genU Training – it’s really good and relevant information. Kate and Anita have told us that they’re always available, which is really accommodating.”

Laura is excited for what the future holds, with hopes to continue to provide excellent support to her team and clients.
