“Disability has always been a part of my life”
genU Training graduate, Tarnia, completed a dual course qualification in Certificate IV in Disability and Certificate IV in Mental Health, and hasn’t looked back.
“Making a difference to someone else’s life, making them smile and helping them achieve their goals. That’s what drives me to come to work every day,” Tarnia said.
Tarnia has wanted to work in the Disability industry since she was a child; “Disability has always been a part of my life.”
A big heart drives Tarnia’s mission to work in the Disability sector, as well as her own personal circumstances. Tarnia’s mother was born with Spinal Bifida and Scoliosis, and as a child she watched how her mother faced barriers every day due to her disability.
“Being trained through genU I know I have the skills, knowledge and confidence to care for someone with a disability.”
After completing her course through genU Training, Tarnia completed her placement in the packaging warehouse at genU Business Enterprises. She then stayed on as a casual staff supervisor for three years.
“I want to support them in every aspect of their lives.”
A year ago, Tarnia joined the Support Services team at genU, allowing her to continue to do more for the supported employees and advance her career in Disability.
“genU Training is a family environment where you’re really appreciated.”
Tarnia is also a workplace mentor, supporting and training supported staff when they undertake new tasks or learn new skills.
“At genU, you’re not just an employee number.”
