Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) feeding involves several key components to ensure proficiency in both the insertion and management of PEG tubes. Participants learn the procedural steps for safely inserting a PEG tube, including patient assessment, sterile techniques, and the use of endoscopic equipment. Training also covers the identification and management of potential complications, such as infections, tube dislodgement, or blockage.

Additionally, the training emphasizes practical skills for the ongoing care of the PEG tube, including how to clean and secure the tube, administer nutritional feeds, and monitor for signs of problems. Instruction includes educating patients and caregivers on daily maintenance routines and troubleshooting common issues. Overall, the training aims to equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to provide effective and compassionate care for patients reliant on PEG feeding.

PEG Feeding is a non-accredited course.

 

On successful completion, learners will receive a Certificate of Participation.

Study requirements

During your study, you will need to meet specific requirements that are necessary for you to complete your course work and be successful:

 

Workstation setup

You will need a quiet space for study that has stable internet connection. You will also need:

  • Web camera, microphone and speakers
  • Smartphone
  • Earbuds or headphones
  • Zoom video conferencing software

 

Please note: You will need to turn your camera and microphone on, as required when using video conferencing.

  • Understanding the PEG Procedure: Knowledge of the steps involved in the insertion of a Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) tube, including patient preparation, sterile techniques, and endoscopic guidance.
  • Complication Management: Ability to identify, prevent, and address common complications associated with PEG tubes, such as infections, tube dislodgement, and blockages.
  • Tube Care and Maintenance: Proficiency in the daily care of the PEG tube, including cleaning, securing the tube, and monitoring for signs of issues.
  • Feed Administration: Skills in administering nutritional feeds through the PEG tube, including understanding different types of feed and proper techniques for infusion.
  • Patient and Caregiver Education: Capability to educate patients and their caregivers on the management of the PEG tube, including maintenance routines, troubleshooting, and ensuring patient comfort.
