Hospitality Essentials

The hospitality industry needs U! This course gives you hands-on experience in food preparation, work health and safety, coffee making, pouring beer and wine, serving beverages, customer service, processing financial transactions and workplace hygiene and cleanliness.

This courses includes three accredited units plus your opportunity to gain a Draught Beer Pouring badge (non-accredited), which is a great addition to your resume. You will also gain practical hands on experience using current hospitality equipment and techniques.


This course includes non-accredited content with the addition of the following nationally accredited unit(s):

  • SITXFSA001 Use hygienic practices for food safety
  • SITXWHS001 Participate in safe work practices
  • SITXFIN001 Process financial transactions

What will you learn?

You will learn and develop the required skills to competently work in the hospitality industry and get hands on experience in food preparation, serving a range of beverages (including hot drinks, beer, wine etc) , customer service, processing financial transactions (electronic and cash) and workplace hygiene and cleanliness.

In this course you will learn:

  • Customer service
  • Using commercial coffee machines, grinders and how to prepare and serve espresso coffee
  • Hygienic practices for food safety
  • How to process financial transactions (EFTPOS and cash)
  • Responsible service of alcohol

Session Content

Day 1 Session
9:30am – 4:00pm  Customer Service
Learn about customer service, up-selling, processing financial transactions, using EFTPOS machines , cash and much much more.


Day 2 Session
9:30am – 4:00pm  Coffee/Barista Day
Today is all about using commercial coffee machines, grinders and making and serving excellent hospitality industry standard hot beverages ! Lots of coffee and more.


Day 3 Session
9:30am – 4:00pm  Safe Work Practices
Gain the skills and knowledge required to incorporate safe work practices into workplace activities. Follow predetermined health, safety and security procedures and participate in organisational work health and safety (WHS) management practices.


Day 4 Session
9:30am – 4:00pm  Food Safety 101
Today we will learn all about food safety and get hands on experience preparing a hamburger incorporating the unit Use hygienic practices for food safety (SITXFSA001).


Day 5 Session
9:30am – 4:00pm  RSA and Bar Masterclass
Learn beer pouring using a tapped keg, wine pouring and more system and earn your VCGLR issued Responsible Service of Alcohol certificate.



Upon successful completion, a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment will be issued for the following units of competency:

  • SITXFSA001 Use hygienic practices for food safety
  • SITXWHS001 Participate in safe work practices
  • SITXFIN001 Process financial transactions


For courses delivered in Victoria

Victorian students who successfully complete the Responsible Service of Alcohol, will be presented with a Certificate of Completion issued by the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation. Please note this RSA certificate is only valid in the state of Victoria.

For courses delivered in Queensland

Queensland students will be able to complete the additional unit:

  • SITHFAB002 Provide responsible service of alcohol

For courses delivered in New South Wales

RSA not available at this time.

Entry requirements

  • A person under the age of 18 can complete an approved RSA training course but must wait until they turn 18 to use it

Study requirements

During your study, you will need to meet specific requirements that are necessary for you to complete your course work and be successful:

  • Students will need to demonstrate that they have the appropriate language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills
