Assess the risks of hazardous manual handling
Hazardous Manual Handling training teaches participants how to assess and mitigate the risks of manual handling through proper techniques, including adopting safe lifting practices and using equipment like hoists and slide sheets.
This course is particularly relevant to support workers in health care settings and covers the spectrum of manual handling activities, including lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying objects.
This course covers the relevant legislation, standards, and codes of practice, ensuring participants understand their legal obligations and organisational policies. Practical strategies for risk assessment and control measures are discussed, along with the importance of regular training and refresher courses.
Upon successful completion, learners will receive a Certificate of Participation.

Study requirements
Students will need to demonstrate that they have the appropriate:
- Language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills
- Communication, documentation and research skills
- Physical capacity for manual handling
- Access to a laptop or desktop computer, with basic digital literacy skills
This course will help ensure the health and safety of participants, enabling them to safely complete manual handling while in the workplace.

Hazardous Manual Handling can be studied in the following modes and times:
On-campus (day) – Study face to face in a classroom setting, supplemented with guided activities via the Learning Management System (eLearning).
- 3 hour morning session: 9.30am – 12.30pm, or
- 3 hour afternoon session: 1.30pm – 4.30pm.
