This course is designed to support people with intellectual disability, permanent cognitive impairment or special learning needs to develop basic employment skills in preparation for work. With a focus on occupational health and safety, effective communication and personal management strategies, students will graduate ready to seek meaningful work or explore further education opportunities. Students will familiarise themselves with employer expectations through a valuable 80-hour work placement, putting their newfound skills and knowledge into practice. Working closely with expert trainers, students will be supported to develop an individual vocational plan which will empower them to take their next career step with confidence.
To be awarded 22566VIC Certificate I in Work Education, a student must successfully complete a total of ten (10) units of competency, consisting of:
- seven (7) core units, and;
- three (3) elective units.
Where the course is not completed, a Statement of Attainment will be issued for any completed units.
genU Training delivers the electives listed in the ‘Elective units’ below. These electives have been selected based on industry needs, student pathways and/or student and trainer/assessor feedback. Alternative suitable electives are only available via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer (CT).

Learners will be issued with a statement of attainment for all successfully completed units.
Work placement
To achieve this qualification, a student must complete a minimum of 80 hours of work placement.
We are well connected with industry and will organise work placement for you that will satisfy the learning outcomes of your qualification. If the placement option we source is not suitable, you are welcome to source your own placement opportunity, and we will assess if the learning outcomes will be met. Placement is unpaid.
If you are employed and wish to complete your placement hours with your current employer, your workplace will need to be assessed to ensure the learning outcomes will be met.

Entry requirements
Entry to the 22566VIC Certificate I in Work Education is restricted to post compulsory school age learners with evidence of a permanent cognitive impairment / intellectual disability.
Permanent cognitive impairment / intellectual disability must be evidenced. Evidence could include but is not limited to:
- Formal assessment by a registered medical practitioner
- Doctors / specialist reports
- Attendance at a Special School / SDS
- Integration support at school
- Integration support at school with modified curriculum
While learners may also have the following conditions, these alone do not constitute a permanent cognitive impairment / intellectual disability:
- Social and / or emotional issues
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
- Specific learning difficulties
- Mental health conditions
- Physical disabilities

Study requirements
During your study, you will need to meet specific requirements that are necessary for you to complete your course work and be successful:
- Access to digital technologies (e.g. laptop, desktop, tablet-computer and/or smartphone) with basic digital literacy skills
- Students will need to demonstrate that they have the appropriate language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills.

genU Training offer 22566VIC Certificate I in Work Education, in the following format:
On-campus (day) – Study face to face (in a classroom setting)
Two (2) days per week: 9:30am – 3:30pm, for 16 months approx; or
Three (3) days per week: 9:30am – 3:30pm, for 10 months approx.
NB: All study modes require students to access and undertake additional activities, including: research activities, reflections and assessments via the Learning Management System (LMS).
